Review: Buzzkill

Buzzkill stars Daniel Raymont as a struggling writer who refuses to give up on his depressing script no matter what obstacles get in his way. His life is falling apart around him as his girlfriend leaves him, his body betrays him, and a serial killer becomes his biggest fan. No matter what gets in his way, he still presses on towards a meeting in Los Angeles that will prove that his time was not wasted on his script.

It's a smaller indie flick but that doesn't stop the filmmakers from making the most out of every cent they have. With a big cast of character actors and a leading man that fills the role of abused writer Ray Wyatt perfectly, they push forward with one hell of a road movie. While some of the situations get a little ridiculous, you don't for one second disbelieve that this man would not stumble into them. Life is crapping on him that much.

Raymont plays out the terrible situations he finds his character in perfectly. You can see the pressure build as each trial forces him to decide if it's all worth it and each time he rebounds it's with more determination and a little less sanity each time.

The rest of the random cast is fun to watch as well. Krysten Ritter plays an annoying young waitress who comes along for the ride and proves to be more trouble than shes worth quickly. The character is annoying and that means shes doing her job. Darrell Hammond plays a rather disturbing character who seems to be having a little too much fun in the role. He's a great addition.

The film overall has a good look and an interesting story. It rarely feels like it was shot on a small budget and that's difficult to pull off. I liked how the story focused on the character of Wyatt and didn't stray. It could have easily followed a couple of the other characters, but it decided to stick with the writer, and I feel that made for a better tale. His reactions to the world around him were much funnier than seeing it for ourselves.

I think if this film had been made by a major studio and had a ton more cash thrown at it to up the production value it would do some good business. The script is there and the actors didn't disappoint. But even without a ton of Hollywood cash to throw around the filmmakers did a great job of making this world come alive and never feel like it was done on the cheap.

Liked I liked the character of Ray Wyatt. For as much as the world was trying to keep him down he just kept on going. Daniel Raymont was perfect for the role.
Disliked The beginning was a little slow but once it got going it didn't stop for one second.
